Underfoot, Relief Tile Series, 2023 - ongoing
I find the delicate balance between fragility and resilience that characterises the natural world, an endless source of fascination. Each relief tile, imprinted and embellished with intricate forms of flora, stands as both a homage to the poetic essence of nature and a prompt to reflect on the interconnectedness that quietly embraces us.
The Underfoot series has developed alongside my journeys through the Dlinza Forest. I collect objects of interest—mostly skeleton leaves and pieces of bark—ensuring that I never break or pick anything, only taking what nature has already shed.
The forest floor is a tapestry of layers, where forgotten leaves and twigs create a rich mosaic of life-giving decay. This decaying matter is teeming with life and potential, providing nourishment for new growth. It's in this place of forgottenness and renewal that I find inspiration, translating the forest floor into my relief tiles. Each piece is a testament to the unseen cycles of life, death, and rebirth that sustain our natural world, encouraging us to find meaning in the quiet, often unnoticed corners of existence.
